Writing Box: links, pictures and documents
Add links, upload and resize images, attach documents and embed YouTube videos.
Before you start: Open a page or content item you can edit in the Admin Portal. These lessons demonstrate the existing Writing box controls.
How to use this lesson
Read the instruction, then look at the pointer on the example screen. Click or tap Next below when you are ready. The example screen is a demonstration. It cannot save, send or change anything.
“Select” means click once with a mouse, or tap once with a finger. You can go back, restart or take a break at any time.

Open the page you want to edit
In the portal, select Pages, then click a page you can edit. The same Writing box is also used for News, Events, Emergency pages and Gateway content.
Look at the example. Then select Next when you are ready.

Open the page you want to edit
In the portal, select Pages, then click a page you can edit. The same Writing box is also used for News, Events, Emergency pages and Gateway content.
Find the Writing box
Scroll down to Writing box. This example already contains a sentence. Click inside the box to type your own content.
Highlight the words for a link
Select the words you want residents to click, such as Community Hub.
Select Add link
Click the chain-link icon in the toolbar.
Select “Web address”
Paste the full address of the page you want to link to.
Enter web address
Type your own details here. In this example, we have entered “https://example.org/community-hub”.
Add the link
Select Add link. The selected words become a link.
Check the link
The linked words are shown in the Writing box. Use meaningful words so residents know where the link will take them.
Position the cursor for a picture
Click where you want the picture to appear in the Writing box.
Select Add image
Click the picture icon. Choose an image in your device’s file picker, then select Open or Choose. Wait for the upload.
Check the image
The image is inserted at the text cursor. If an upload error appears, follow the message before continuing.
Resize the image
Drag the resize handle on the image’s lower right corner. The editor allows widths from 25% to 100% of the available space.
Check the new width
The image is now narrower. Choose a size that keeps the subject clear.
Position the document link
Click in the Writing box where you want the downloadable document link.
Select Add document
Click the document icon in the toolbar.
Choose document
Select a PDF or Word document within the upload limit shown by the editor. Select the file on your device, then select Open or Choose in your device’s file picker.
Check the selected file
Wait for the upload to finish. This example uses community-hub-information.pdf. Your device’s file picker may look different.
Select “Link wording”
Enter a clear label for the document link.
Enter link wording
Type your own details here. In this example, we have entered “Read the Community Hub information”.
Insert the document
Click Add document and wait for the upload to finish.
Check the document link
Residents use this link to open the uploaded document. Save the surrounding page to keep it.
Position the video
Click where you want the video in the Writing box.
Select Add YouTube video
Click the video icon. This control accepts YouTube links.
Select “YouTube link”
Paste the address of a suitable YouTube video. This training URL is a sample video, not community guidance.
Enter youtube link
Type your own details here. In this example, we have entered “https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=aqz-KE-bpKQ”.
Add the video
Check the preview, then click Add video.
Check or remove the video
The embedded video appears in the editor. Its × control removes it if you no longer want it.
Save the page
Click Save on the surrounding form to keep the link, document, image or video changes.
